COVID CITY BLUES – Read more
COVID CITY BLUES (ongoing project) – Has the Covid Pandemic changed forever, the nature of work in the City of London’s Square Mile?
The lockdowns in response to the Covid Pandemic seem to have precipitated the changing way of how we work in this world-class financial district in the heart of London. The Square Mile, first emptied back in March, has since struggled to get back to normality as it tries to adapt to what looks like a fundamental change in work patterns made easier in the digital age. Big empty skyscrapers built to herald a new dynamic phase after the financial crash of 2008, now look more like redundant “white elephants” that look down on solitary figures walking the near abandoned streets below; as corporations are choosing to keep their employees working from home remotely. The resulting closure of many of the myriad of small businesses that have relied on the City of London’s commuters, has given this fabled area the look of a ghost town.
