Bareknuckle Boxing in Venda, South Africa

In the remote Venda area of Northern South Africa, local champions from the village of Gabo meet their counterparts from the neighbouring village of Chivudzi on the other side of the river, to partake in an annual bareknuckle boxing tournament known as the ‘Musengwa”. it is open to all who are considered brave enough to confront their fears, regardless of age, size or strength; which only adds to this surprisingly good-natured chaotic free-for-all fight fest.
There are few rules; the one hard and fast one being that the fight is stopped the moment blood is spilled. The only prize for the winners is the old-fashioned honour and admiration of one’s peers, in what is deemed as the noble art.
