The City of London’s Square Mile

The images shown below are from long-term body of work that has now been published as a book titled “The Same For Everyone” (published by Snap Collective publishing) and is from Andy’s wanderings through the City of London’s fabled financial district known as the the Square Mile – the City within a City. A unique area that plays by it’s own rules, which has been at the very heart of how all our Anglo-American Neo-Liberal economies are now run.

Characterised by it’s boom-bust cycles, the City recovered after the 2008/9 banking crisis in a huge construction boom, but recently has also weathered the Brexit and the Covid crisis and is now trying to adjust to the changing working patterns of the digital age that may yet change it forever.

Andy’s photography looks at how it’s inhabitants relate to this Urban environment – a mixed landscape of narrow streets and alleyways next to ancient buildings juxtaposed with big intersections overlooked by shiny glass monuments to 21st century Capitalism.

“I look at this area very much as a street photographer; capturing candid moments in the flow of human traffic around me. I try to look towards graphic, strongly-lit scenes – pockets of light and light reflections from windows hitting the pavements below; as figures, shadows and silhouettes mix on it’s streets.“

Work from this book has been recently awarded the “Trieste Photodays 2025 Best Author” prize.
